UEFA Champions League : FC Porto 1-1 FC Shakhtar Donetsk

Aboubakar rescues Porto point against Shakhtar

FC Shakhtar Donetsk held UEFA Champions League Group H winners FC Porto to a draw in the Estádio do Dragão as the section's two qualified sides could not be separated.

Despite there being no qualification pressure on either team, chances had been at a premium until Taras Stepanenko's breakthrough in the 50th minute as he headed in a Bernard corner. Porto's much-changed side took time to click but Bruno Martins Indi nodded against the crossbar in the 71st minute and then Vincent Aboubakar had the Dragons' fans roaring as he thrashed home an 87th-minute equaliser.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu – without suspended UEFA Champions League top scorer Luiz Adriano – had predicted a good, open game and Olexandr Gladkiy did have a terrific early opportunity for the Pitmen yet was unable to make the connection at the far post that was required to turn the ball in. Porto winger Ricardo Quaresma was lively, shooting straight at Andriy Pyatov on the half-hour and within seconds the goalkeeper was called upon again, diving to his right to save from Adrián López.

Porto were forced into a reshuffle when midfielder Rúben Neves went off with a knee injury. Martins Indi came on and Iván Marcano stepped up the pitch from centre-half. Shakhtar' captain for the night, Stepanenko, picked up a costly booking just before the interval and will be suspended for the first leg of the round of 16.

Bernard had looked the most dangerous attacker on either side and he provided the assist from a corner as Stepanenko partially redeemed his night, getting away from his marker and soaring to power in a commanding header which gave Shakhtar the lead. Porto almost equalised immediately as Aboubakar flashed a volley on the turn narrowly wide.

Shakhtar carried the greater menace in wide areas and Bernard slipped another fine pass to Alex Teixeira, his fellow Brazilian, whose powerful strike was deflected over. Porto substitute Martins Indi crashed a header against the crossbar from a Ricardo cross entering the final 20 minutes but it appeared Porto would be frustrated until Aboubakar seized on a loose Fernando touch and rifled in a shot from 25 metres that Pyatov could only palm into the roof of the net.

Emiliano Martinez

“It really helps me. Lolo and Per are both experienced, organisationally strong and always talk to you. It is so easy to play behind them.

"It is amazing [to keep three clean sheets]. I need to enjoy it and say thank you to my defenders as well. They have been outstanding in the last three games. It is always good to keep a clean sheet and do your job.

“I know I am young and I need to wait for opportunities. When the opportunity comes, you need to be confident and show the manager that you can play as well. I think I am doing it, I am breeding confidence in my defenders and I am really pleased with that."

Martinez puts his good form down to a positive mindset and believing in his own ability, no matter how big the occasion.

“I like to command my area and help the defenders,” he said. “If there are more crosses coming in, I am going to come.

"I have been around English football for a few years, so I know how to play, I know it is quicker than anywhere. I need to play how I always play, like I do in the under-21s or for my national team. That's the keeper I am."

Cristiano Ronaldo brought Real's charge having a superb opener right after 23 min's and Karim Benzema extra two ahead of the interval to help leave the particular hosts going through a determined exercise inside damage constraint.

Rodgers bemoans 'sloppy' Liverpool

It was initially Liverpool have been three along at half-time at Anfield in their long along with glorious Eu history - a truth no skepticism noted by simply Real trainer Carlo Ancelotti, who was responsible for AC Milan inside Istanbul inside 2005 if the Reds believed the Champs League right after facing a comparable heavy deficit with the interval.

In this article, in comparison, the Italian was able to enjoy an appropriate second fifty percent as Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers's fearless pre-match words and phrases about not being underdogs were put into context.

With only three points off their opening a few games, Liverpool's aspirations of reaching the knockout stage of any competition these people cherish a great deal are inside real peril.

And the particular performance involving Mario Balotelli meant it absolutely was another night time that eventually left question grades over Liverpool's decision to pay for £16m for any striker that simply doesn't deliver as soon as it matters.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener for Real Madrid at Liverpool

He has been substituted right after 45 minutes as well as the sight involving him trading shirts along with Real defensive player Pepe as the teams travelled off at half-time won't have been very well received by simply home supporters.

Real's domination has been so comprehensive, and the ultimate phase of the game a really procession, that Ancelotti thought secure enough to take out Ronaldo right after 75 minutes to protect him because of this weekend's 'El Clasico' along with Barcelona.

With their credit, The Kop schedule old differences while using former Stansted United legend to applaud his or her departure about the night as soon as he obtained his 70th Champs League purpose, leaving him just one single behind an additional Real This town legend, Raul.

Cristiano Ronaldo obtained the opener with regard to Real This town at Liverpool
Ronaldo gotten warm applause from Liverpool supporters when this individual was substituted inside the second fifty percent

Liverpool, minus the departed Luis Suarez as well as the injured Daniel Sturridge, look the shadow of the side which almost believed the Top League very last season, while using pace along with pressing noticeable by the absence.

Anfield shook towards the sound involving 'You'll Never Walk Alone' long following your pre-match audio stopped - but that was the substantial point of any harrowing first 45 min's for Liverpool.

The hosts came out swinging, aiming to land an early on blow, although Real, minus the injured Gareth Bale, rolled while using punches previous to delivering the masterclass inside possession along with attacking capability.

The 10-time Eu champions acquired shown ominous signs possibly before Ronaldo started out the credit scoring on twenty three minutes. He started the transfer midfield, locating James Rodriguez, who lifted an ideal chipped pass for that Portuguese to fulfill it away from home and hook a fantastic finish past Simon Mignolet.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Balotelli ahead of the Liverpool-Real Madrid game

The second goal appeared seven min's later as soon as Benzema directed Toni Kroos's long cross looping past Mignolet having a far-post header to help leave Anfield hushed.

Van Persie and Blind play in Netherlands win

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie won and netted a late penalty as the Netherlands avoided a shock by beating Kazahkstan 3-1 in their European Championship qualifier on Friday night.

Skipper van Persie went close on several occasions at Amsterdam ArenA before finally getting on the scoresheet as Guus Hiddink’s side, for whom Daley Blind also played 90 minutes at left-back, came from behind to overcome their lowly opponents.

Either side of Renat Abdulin’s shock headed opener in the 12th minute for Kazahkstan, ranked 127th in the world, van Persie had an effort disallowed for offside, flicked a header onto the roof of the net and saw a close-range shot saved.

The frontman fired another good chance wide from a narrow angle after the break, before substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finally made the breakthrough just after the hour mark.

Baurzhan Dzholchiev was then sent off for an ill-judged tackle and the Dutch took advantage through Ibrahim Afellay's strike, before van Persie made the game safe from the spot – his 48th international goal – after being brought down in the box.

It was a vital three points for the Netherlands after they had lost their Group A opener to the Czech Republic last month.

Di Maria, Rojo & Argentina lose to Brazil

Manchester United stars Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo were left disappointed on Saturday after Argentina lost 2-0 to fierce rivals Brazil in China, where Diego Tardelli’s double proved decisive.

Both players were named in Gerardo Martino’s starting team and completed full matches at the Beijing National Stadium, the venue that was built for the 2008 Olympic Games and provided a fitting venue for this inherently glamorous international friendly.

Brazil took the lead on 28 minutes when Atletico Mineiro striker Tardelli volleyed in his first international goal after Argentina had failed to clear the ball from danger, kicking off a clinical personal performance that would overshadow the unusually quiet Neymar.

Lionel Messi also failed to shine and should have restored parity before the break when Di Maria was fouled by Danilo to earn his side a penalty. However, the Barcelona icon could only muster a weak spot-kick that was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Jefferson.

Brazil started the second half with more confidence and almost scored again when Chelsea’s Filipe Luis fired over the crossbar. Oscar also went close, before 29-year-old Tardelli doubled his tally with an opportunistic back-post header on 64 minutes.

Argentina rallied but could not break down the Brazilians, who were well organised by new manager, Dunga, who has now overseen three straight wins as boss.

Di Maria, Falcao find the net as Man United dig deep to beat Everton

Angel Di Maria struck home a gorgeous goal in the first half then set up Radamel Falcao for the winner in the second to give Manchester United a much needed 2-1 win over Everton today at Old Trafford. It was neither pretty nor convincing - but they will take it.

Falcao's first goal for United came just after the hour and against the run of play, when he beat the trap to redirect Di Maria's cross past Tim Howard. Everton protested furiously at the decision, but the linesman had it dead to rights. The win eased some of the pressure on manager Louis van Gaal, who has overseen a difficult start to United's new campaign.

This fixture had a fair bit of frisson ahead of the kickoff: after all, last April this same meeting proved to be David Moyes' Waterloo, with the manager sacked two days after he lost to his former club, 2-0.

Today, with both teams wobbling, there was real worry over the result for the Old Trafford faithful: a win would pull them into the top four ahead of the late games; a loss would leave them bobbing about in the bottom half of the table. Everton, who had not won a game since the middle of September, were in similar straits.

While they had recovered to snatch a late draw in the Merseyside derby, they have been underwhelming this season, with a string of draws and a couple of bad losses to their credit. The Toffees also had a slew of absentees - Kevin Mirallas, Sylvain Distin, Seamus Coleman -and were shaking off long trip back from Russia after their 1-1 draw Thursday against Krasnodar in the Europa League.

United Talisman Wayne Rooney was banned for his sending off last week against West Ham, so Mata, often the odd man out here, was put in as playmaker. But with youngster Paddy McNair back in - and given the unenviable task of marking Romelu Lukaku - United started strong, with Di Maria and Falcao combining well. Falcao forced a stop out of Howard in just the third minute, and then would smash a good chance wide fifteen minutes later as Everton were kept off the ball in midfield.
Di Maria's goal in the 26th minute came after a burst of sustained pressure that saw Rafael whip in a cross that was hooked back by defender Phil Jagielka, but only as far as Mata.

Mata squared the ball with a perfectly weighted pass to allow the former Real Madrid man to run on and smash a curling shot past Howard to cut inside the far post. It was fully deserved as for long stretches of this match United were firmly in charge, with the fizzing Falcao and Di Maria pegging Everton back.

Looking hesitant and uncertain, with only Gareth Barry truly making an impact, Everton failed to make keeper David De Gea work at all until the final minute of the first half, when Shaw made a foolish mistake. Tackling Tony Hibbert - hardly a major scoring threat - at full gallop in the box, he forced ref Kevin Friend to make a decision, and he pointed right to the spot.

But Baines, who had made 14 straight penalties, looked oddly nervous, and he put his kick too close to the keeper, who also had guessed correctly. It was deflating moment for the Toffees, and their lethargy continued after the break, with Falcao forcing John Stones into a goal-saving block.

It was not until just before the hour mark that Everton looked a threat. Valencia caught Lukaku late to set up a free-kick, and from 35 yards, Baines curled in a fine delivery that caught United flat. Naismith was allowed to slip in for a free header to remind everyone what United's Achilles' heel truly is: that sloppy back four.

Last season they did that, but then let Arsenal off the hook in a 1-1 draw. The PST gang break down the weekend’s most intriguing matchup.

4. Mario Balotelli being the main man for Liverpool

Daniel Sturridge is out injured and could miss the next six games for Liverpool. ‘Have no fear, Super Mario is here!’ Or something like that… Anyway, Balotelli will be making his Anfield debut against Aston Villa on Saturday and will hold the goalscoring burden as the main man while Sturridge is out injured. Balotelli will come up against Ron Vlaar and Philippe Senderos, two powerhouses at the heart of Villa’s defense. That will be an intriguing battle as the Italian must keep his head.

Will Balotelli be on target for Liverpool on his Anfield debut?

5. Scrap at the Stadium of Light

Tottenham Hotspur head to the Stadium of Light after a week of headlines off the field and coming off the back of a 3-0 drubbing to Balotelli’s Liverpool. They play Sunderland and it will be a real battle on Wearside as two South American managers clash in Mauricio Pochettino and Gus Poyet. Both insist on high-pressure and Pochettino’s former side Southampton went to Sunderland three times last season in the league and cup, lost twice and blew a 2-0 lead. Poch will hope it’s a much happier hunting ground for him with his new team who must rebound, but they will have to work hard vs. the Black Cats.

6. Can the Toffees get through their sticky patch?

West Brom away. Before the season, you’d mark that down as a routine win for Everton, but after a tricky start where they have two points from three games and have let in 10 goals, Roberto Martinez’s men aren’t flowing. The Toffees look a little disjointed, especially at the back, and you get the feeling that their late collapse against Arsenal at home in Week 2 really knocked the stuffing out of them. Romelu Lukaku has yet to score and needs to put in a big display against his former team.

7. Eagles and Clarets battle for first win

Much like the match at Sunderland, this will be a real ding-dong battle, a blood and thunder affair, a …. okay, you get the picture. Both teams are still without a win this season and it is Neil Warnock’s first home game back in charge of Palace. Both teams will be earmarking this as ‘must-win’ already and it will be a game of few chances as Burnley have done well at stifling the opposition thus far in the PL. Passion, power and crunching tackles will be in abundance at Selhurst Park.

8. Top of the table clash between Chelsea and… Swansea

Okay, so it may not always be billed as a top of the table clash but on Saturday it will be. Both Chelsea and Swansea are the only two teams to win three from three so far. Garry Monk’s men have impressed, especially as they walloped West Brom 3-0 before the break. Can they upset Jose Mourinho and Chelsea? The Blues have looked imperious, smashing six past Everton and the signings of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas continued to make the ‘Special One’ look, erm, special. A cracker for you to enjoy.

Let’s talk about Cesc…

9. Saints’ silky skills to get past under-pressure Magpies?

Ronald Koeman’s brand of “sexy football” hasn’t taken long to unearth itself on the South Coast. Saints cruised past West Ham 3-1 away from home last time out and will now look to hammer one of the final nails in the coffin of former manager Alan Pardew. His Newcastle side are without a win, and coupled with their poor form to finish last season, Pardew is on borrowed time already. Saints’ silky stars such as Dusan Tadic and Morgan Schneiderlin could spell trouble for the Magpies. Also, spare a thought for Newcastle’s fans who make the longest journey in the PL this weekend, a 750 mile round trip for the Toon Army.

10. Vanishing spray. Legendary.

Okay, let’s finish this on a lighter note. How much do we love the vanishing spray? I know, right. Also, how much do fans inside Premier League stadiums love vanishing spray? Even more, it seems. Listen in to the audio on all the games this weekend whenever a referee is using the spray. The crowd will build up tension and ring out the ‘ole’s’ when the spray is being applied. Like a wielding matador, referee’s have so far used swaggering panache to perform a pretty mundane task. You try telling PL crowds it’s mundane. They love it, as do I.

Arsenal eye Welbeck and El-Haddadi as cover for crocked Giroud

BY BILL MANN

With just five days to go before the transfer window slams shut the tension is mounting, just like the injury list at Arsenal. And talking of which... with Olivier Giroud set to be sidelined until Christmas has Arsene Wenger already identified a replacement? The Daily Express thinks so, and reports that the Gunners are "keeping tabs" on Munir El-Haddadi of Barcelona.

At just 18 years of age, the Barca frontman is invariably described as a "wonderkid" and yet he could come as cheap as £10m because of his age. El-Haddadi had a "sensational debut" for Barca on Sunday, scoring for the Catalan club in their defeat of Elche. According to the Express Wenger "has been watching him for quite some time" although if the Nutty Professor does want to land the youngster he'll have to act fast as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked to him.

What might persuade El-Haddadi to make the move to the Emirates is the knowledge that his place at the Camp Nou will be taken by Luis Suarez once he's finished his biting ban and then there is also Neymar, recovering from the injury he sustained for Brazil during the World Cup, in front of him in the pecking order.

Of course Wenger has plenty more targets up his sleeve if Barca won't sell. The most unlikely of which appears to be former Birmingham striker Nikola Zigic, last seen scoring for the Blues in a Championship relegation clash with Bolton last season. Now, according to his agent and the Birmingham Mail, the 33-year-old is in line for a shock move to Arsenal.

A more realistic target might be Danny Welbeck of Manchester United, last seen losing to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup. The England striker has been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and the Daily Mail says that Wenger is a long-term admirer of the player and could move to sign him before the transfer window closes. The paper adds that QPR's French striker Loic Remy is another possible target.

Meanwhile Arsenal appear to have missed the boat on Roma's Mehdi Benatia with confirmation from Goal.com that the 27-year-old has been snapped up by Bayern Munich. As we reported yesterday, the German giants had been dithering over the Moroccan defender but could it be that after reading Transfer Talk's report of Arsenal's interest they decided to act?

Munir El-Haddadi

Benatia has been signed for what Goal.com describes as "an undisclosed fee" with the player set to travel to Munich later this week to complete a medical and agree personal terms. It's believed the deal will be for five years.

To make matters worse for Wenger, Roma have already lined up a replacement for Benatia: none other than Arsenal's other main defensive target Kostas Manolas of Olympiakos. The Daily Mail reports that the two clubs have agreed a £10.4m deal for the 23-year-old who was on the brink of becoming a Gunner just last week. It leaves Wenger with just a few days to identify and sign a new defender, after he allowed Thomas Vermaelen to leave earlier in the summer.

In other news Talksport says that Manchester United have "not made contact with Ajax" about Daley Blind, which must be a relief to the Dutch defender given the Red Devils' humiliating 4-0 defeat to the MK Dons in last night's Capital One clash. It was claimed earlier in the month that United were ready to offer the Dutch club £18m for the defender, but Blind's agent, Rob Jansen, told Talksport they had yet to make an approach for the Netherlands international. "At this moment Manchester United have not been in touch with me or Ajax about Daley and I'm not sitting here waiting for the call," said Jansen. Ajax boss Frank de Boer said recently he wanted Blind to stay in Ajax but he also admitted the club "cannot refuse" a big money offer if one was made by Louis van Gaal.

Finally, and not altogether unexpectedly, United have confirmed the capture of Angel di Maria. Announcing the deal on their official website the club said they had paid Real Madrid a "British record fee of £59.7m" for the Argentine winger, who arrives at Old Trafford on a five-year contract.

The 26-year-old Di Maria, capped 52 times by his country, apparently told the website in perfect English: "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United... Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started."

He was, of course, speaking before what's already been dubbed the 'Milton Keynes Massacre'. ·

David Moyes to be Sacked if Man United Lose at Arsenal tonight..??

Exclusive: David Moyes to be Sacked if Man United Lose at Arsenal??

David Moyes Man United
David Moyes Man United - Old Trafford manager’s future hangs in the balance.

David Moyes is within 48 hours of a possible sensational sacking as his future as Man United boss hangs in the balance.

CaughtOffside understands that the Scot is perilously close being sacked by his Old Trafford employers and defeat away at the Emirates Stadium could spell the end of his brief reign in charge of the footballing giants.

Defeat in North London could leave Man United a massive 12 points off a top four finish with just a dozen games to play and the club’s American owners will then look to act immediately to offer arguably a better shot at securing a crucial Champions League berth.

There is a growing sense among those in positions of power at Man United that under David Moyes the club are unlikely to produce the run of title winning form needed from this point onwards, just to secure a top four finish, which is now the minimum requirement from the Glazers from what has proven a disastrous campaign.

It’s been a season of mainly lows but David Moyes had looked as though he was steadying the ship as he led Man United to a run of six straight wins in all competitions during December. However the wheels have once again fallen off and the former Everton manager’s debut season at the club is in danger of having massive financial repercussions.

In 2014 Man United have won just two out of six Premier League fixtures and also crashed out to Sunderland and Swansea City in the Capital One and FA Cups respectively.

There is a growing acceptance that Man United are likely to finish the season with no silverware but the prospect of a first ever failure to secure a spot in the Champions League looms large.

The Glazers are well aware of the financial cost that would befall Man United should they fail to secure a top four finish and the damage that such an eventuality could do to the club’s reputation is clearly not lost on any connected with the Premier League title holder’s.

Man United would hope that any appointment of a new manager would have the immediate benefit of an upsurge in form, as is perhaps the norm, and with that in mind, as well as the very real possibility that things could actually get worse under David Moyes, an approach may well be made to re-appoint Sir Alex Ferguson as a short term replacement to see out the current campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson has been in attendance at almost all the club’s matches this term and is still closely linked with the club and his return to the helm could well provide the much needed tonic Man United need and would certainly do down well with some senior players who have not taken well to life under Moyes.

The likes of Robin Van Persie, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have not taken well to David Moyes and it’s clear that Ferguson still has a great deal of respect within the club’s first team squad.

Should the Glazers fail to persuade Sir Alex Ferguson to come out of retirement to see out the season then the Man United owners may opt to turn to former players, and current coaches, Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville to steady the ship until the end of the season when a more permanent solution can be better considered.

MANAGER REACTION- Chelsea 3-1 Man Utd

MANAGER REACTION- Chelsea 3-1 Man Utd

Jose Mourinho on Manchester United's title chances: "It is hard, they are 14 points behind Arsenal, 13 behind Manchester City and 12 from us. Maybe one team collapses but for three to collapse is difficult, so for them I think it is the fight to finish in the top four.

"They will do that with their pride and tradition and fight and hopefully they win against the other contenders because now we do not play against them in the league."

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho tells BBC Sport: "I think it is a big win and deserved, yes. The way I was analysing the game it was hard for them to be losing 2-0 at half time. They started better than us, they had a good initiative.

"The second half was different. For 25-30 minutes we had very good control until we dropped back and they reacted with pride.

"I think this game was a bit of a contradiction to other games. Normally we produce and produce and then it is hard for us to score, this time with the first shot we scored. The second goal was the killer in the box I know from many years ago and it looks like Samuel Eto'o is coming back."
